It isn't delightful but it is an afternoon blog

My opinion of Michael Moore should already be well-known.  I think he’s dishonest.  I think the films he makes do not deserve the label “documentary film” because they don’t deal in 100% of the truth.  I won’t beat a dead horse with the full litany of his lies in his films, but I will mention a few from “Bowling for Columbine” before making my main point.

To try to illustrate the willingness of Republicans to use the ‘race card’, Moore took a real Bush/Quayle campaign ad from 1988 and spliced it in with a “PAC” ad about Willie Horton. Worse yet, the original film added a subtitle that wasn’t part of the original ad (that’s was altered in later releases).

The other illustration is that in Moore’s pack of lies, he showed footage of Charlton Heston saying “I have only five words for you, from my cold dead hands”, referring to a weapon, purportedly from the NRA convention held in Denver immediately following the tragedy at Columbine.  In fact, this comment was made a year later in response to Heston being given a musket.

So now Moore is saying that crime scene photos from the Sandy Hook tragedy should be released to the public, in the hope it will doom the National Rifle Association.  The NRA is quite capable of bringing about its own demise if it continues to march out of step with the wants and desires of the bulk of the population; in any event.  The parents who suffered so much at Sandy Hook don’t need to be tortured by seeing photos of their lost loved ones being paraded in the media to further the aims of this moron.

Okay, enough with that rant.  Other ponderings on this Friday afternoon:

Cher admitted she was in love with Tom Cruise back in the 1980s and that the two “dated”.  Makes sense.  He has a thing for women who are taller than he is.  Or it seems so.

I think it’s great that Ohio Senator Rob Portman has changed his position and is now in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage.  It’s a great thing.  But I’ll be even more impressed when prominent Republicans speak up in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage, who don’t have gay children.  I’m not trying to knock his change of heart.  I’m saying it’s a lot easier to have such a change when someone you love is being harmed by your position.

What kind of idiot relies on his “tasting” of a cookie to determine that there are no nut products involved in the baking of the cookie?  A teen college student is dead because his friend assured him the cookie was safe.  When you have an allergy like that, that can kill you, you need more than a taste or smell test.

The “Fossilman” was famous for winning the World Series of Poker.  Now Greg Raymer is infamous as well, having been arrested in a prostitution sting in North Carolina.  I’m not so much bothered by his arrest as I am by the fact that the rest of the nation can’t follow the lead of Nevada in legalizing and regulating prostitution.  Tax revenues and public safety for both the prostitutes and their clients would be improved.

Jillian Reynolds may be changing her last name again, as she’s splitting from her husband of six years.  I’m saddened by this news.  He was willing to stay home and take care of the house and kids while she went out into the world and earned a living.  That had to be a major change for a man who’d once been a Marine Corps Scout/Sniper.  Here’s hoping they can find a way to remain friendly.

If someone you know is forgetful and sluggish, it may not be dementia.  It might be Lyme Disease.  That’s what happened to former Major League great Tom Seaver.  Wishing him a speedy recovery, although the word is he is making great progress.
