Mother's Day
I do my best to always remember Mother's Day. This year I sent flowers and chocolates and a card that told my mom I think she's the best Mom on the planet. I also called her today and mentioned that I believe what was on the card. She says "and you're not at all biased, right?"
She's right. I'm biased. I've seen a lot of wonderful moms in my life. Working at a school for 17 years will do that. I've seen some that were less than wonderful too, but those are the rare exception in my world. I've read about some mothers who were not good parents in the news, but today is for celebrating the wonderful moms out there.
Then again, there is another slang meaning for "Mother's Day". It falls weekly or bi-weekly, or bi-monthly, depending on how often your employer pays you. Because pay day is also Mother's day. "Pay this mother, pay that mother" and so on, referring to the mother bills we deal with in our lives. I learned that piece of slang in the military and never forgot it. Again, today is the real Mother's day, and I'm glad I got to talk to my mother.
After all, there is a finite amount of risk involved with what I'm having done at the VA tomorrow. The risk is small, but it is there. My response to the risk is that I'm planning on going to the movies on Tuesday instead of today.
I did see "The Great Gatsby" on Friday, and then yesterday I found the time to re-watch the 1974 film version starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. I only saw it the one time when it first hit theaters and I'd never made several associations involving some of the actors in the film. In 1974, Sam Waterston portrayed "Nick Carraway". I'd known that the actor who was "Jack McCoy" for so many years on "Law & Order" had been in "The Killing Fields" and "Crimes and Misdemeanors", but had forgotten all about his work in Gatsby. He was much better as Nick Carraway as Tobey Maguire is in the new version. Also, one of my favorite "Bond girls", Lois Chiles portrays "Jordan" in the 1974 version of the film. You may remember her as "Dr. Holly Goodhead" in "Moonraker".
I knew that there was concern about using 3D printers to make functional guns that have no metal (except for the bullets of course) but I was unaware until today that someone out there went to the trouble to come up with a way to make 3D printable dildos. And apparently there is a market for that. Did I ever tell you about the time I was working part-time as a cashier in an adult bookstore and a woman wanted to return a "sex toy" she'd purchased, claiming it was "too big"? Sadly for her, we had a firm policy, if the box was opened, no returns. A firm policy. Hello, is this on?
