These are the headlines that caught my eye today:
In the headlines, the rumors have come to pass. Jimmy Fallon will take over as the host of
the Tonight Show next year, and the show will move production to New York
City. The mayor of Burbank is not
pleased and hopes NBC will reconsider.
Shaquille O’Neal’s number was retired at last night’s Lakers
game. Some people are taking potshots at
Kobe Bryant for not being part of the ceremony live, as he chose to record his
tribute to Shaq for broadcast during the ceremony.
A kosher meat market accused of not following the strict
rules of kosher (it lost its certification) was purchased by a local
philanthropist. Under his ownership, the
certification may be back as soon as next week.
“Stop and frisk” is under fire in several lawsuits, most
notably in New York City.
North Korea says it will resume operating a nuclear reactor
designed to generate weapons-grade plutonium.
Meanwhile, the U.S. is sending THAADS to Guam to defend it against a
possible missile attack from North Korea.
THAADS stands for Terminal High-Altitude Attack Defense System and is
designed to shoot down hostile incoming missiles during the last part of their
flight.
Roger Ebert has announced his plan to review fewer films may
be linked to reports that his cancer has come back.
Mark Cuban says he may draft a female player in the next NBA
draft if she is “the best player left available”.
A Louisiana man labeled by police as an “anti-government protestor”
is alleged to have kidnapped his two young children from the home of their
grandparents. The parental rights of
Joshua Hakken were terminated on Tuesday.
The “pregnant man” wants to divorce his wife but an Arizona
judge says “no”. The rationale behind
the no is that the judge’s ruling that Thomas Beatie is not a man.
Towson University has a “White Students Union” but critics
say many of its members are not even students at the university. Now students and faculty have marched to show
a united front in the face of the WSU’s “negativity”.
Pancake Puppie wedding cake and Grand Slamarosas will be
served at the first ever wedding at the downtown Las Vegas location of Denny’s.
A San Diego man died after something went wrong during a dental
procedure. He was having his wisdom teeth
removed when he began to cough. An
autopsy is pending.
A Florida man got his Silver Star for heroism in battle,
although since he earned it in 1971, the award may be a bit overdue in the eyes
of many. Ralph Morgan saved his entire
platoon on June 4, 1971 when they came under rocket and mortar attack; by
deliberately exposing himself to and drawing enemy fire while the platoon’s
other members retreated. Somehow the
paperwork for his medal was lost, but now he’s been properly recognized.
WWE superstar Owen Hart died in a tragic accident in
1999. Now he may finally be properly
inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, because the lawsuit filed by his widow
against the WWE has been settled. Until
now, they were blocked from using his name or likeness.
From the “does it really matter?” file: rumors are swirling that actress Hayden
Panettiere has gotten breast implants.

Richie Sambora will miss part of the Bon Jovi tour for “personal
reasons.
Analysts are predicting that at some point, the L.A. Dodgers
will make pitcher Clayton Kershaw the first $200 million pitcher in baseball
history. Kershaw is in the final year of
his contract with the team.
Reality star Kendra Wilkinson (“The Girls Next Door”) was
appearing on ABC’s new show “Splash”, a show featuring celebrities engaging in
platform diving. But when it came time
to dive on the most recent episode, she couldn’t, and was eliminated.
Clark Gable’s son John Clark Gable was arrested for DUI but
claims he had no alcohol in his system when he hit six parked cars.
When it was learned the family of the late reality star
Shain Gandee could not afford to pay for his funeral, the production companies
behind “Buckwild”, the show he was on stepped up and footed the bill.
