FD minus 7
FD = filing deadline. I read another article written by yet another general assignment reporter on the web, with a tax tip and once again it was in error and/or incomplete. They just read something on the IRS website and think they know it all.
Could be worse though. The tax forum on Craigslist has some people who are very helpful to those who post questions; but there is also a lot of misinformation being posted in response to those questions. Bottom line is, ask for free advice and what you get in response to your query is usually worth what you paid for it. Nothing.
I keep the bathroom scale in the corner, beneath a shower seat that was used by the last person to live in this room. That way I don't kick it when walking in or out of the bathroom. Except I didn't slide it all the way under that seat yesterday morning. As a result I have one very sore toe this morning. Since it's on the foot where I'm suffering from plantar fasciitis, it is a major annoyance. Fortunately it isn't that swollen so it should heal fast.
Should any real meaning be taken from the warning by the North Korean government that foreigners in their nation should leave now? No. They might well become more bellicose and could actually launch a missile attack. But they know they are outgunned and outmatched in every military area by those allied against them. China will not defend outright bellicosity by Kim Jong Un.
You want to talk about gun control, add into the discussion the recent incident in Tennessee where a deputy sheriff was showing his guns to a relative when he set one down. Seconds later, his wife was dead, because a 4 year old picked up the gun and it "accidentally discharged". Only a moron is showing off loaded weapons. Gun control MUST include making sure we keep guns unloaded if they will be within reach of children, even for an instant. A woman is dead because of stupidity. They are calling it a tragic accident. The real tragedy is that it was the man's own idiocy and incompetence that killed his wife.
The Centrist Party is announcing its next political position. We want the California legislature to amend the outright ban of even holding a cellphone in your hand while driving. It should be limited to only texting or talking. Why? Because you can look at a paper map when lost and in need of directions, but you can't use your smartphone as a map or GPS device, if it is in your hand. How much more distracting is a map on a phone or iPad versus a map on paper? Fix this, legislators.
Choosing to not hire smokers is an employer's prerogative. Is it really? Should it be? Can employers than discriminate against the obese, those who engage in risky behavior away from the job involving potential major injury? The argument in favor of permitting such bans is that the behaviors of smoking, being obese and serious risk-taking drive up the cost of employer-provided health plans. The argument against is that this is an invasion of privacy and what an employee does off the job shouldn't have any effect on their employment. Well, when a man can be fired from his job because he recorded himself going off on a Chick-Fil-A drive-through employee after the video goes viral, it sounds to me like employers can fire anyone they want to. It's called "at-will employment" and in those states (including California) where it is the law, unless the employer is engaging in discrimination against a protected group, it's legal. The crux of the matter is, should the obese, the smokers and the risk-takers be members of protected groups?
