Sometimes Sleep Saves
The restorative power of a good night's sleep can't be overstated. Last night before bed I was exhausted after several very hectic days in sequence. I went to be a bit early and slept over an hour later than normal. I feel so much better that it's almost immeasurable.
The issue of minority opportunities in filmmaking being sorely lacking just doesn't get the attention it deserves and will be the subject of a more in-depth look when I have a couple of hours to do some solid research. But for the moment, consider that when looking at the top box-office movies of 2012, you have to go all the way to 13th to find a film with a person of color cast in a lead role. "Skyfall" at #4 comes close, but Javier Bardem is considered to have been in a "supporting role". Of the top 25 films at the box office last year, only three had a minority actor in a lead role.
Today's ponderings:
The guy in Helena, Montana who got free pizza in return for crying during his attempt to rob a pizza place apparently made up the "sob story" that got him fed. Dumb. The reality is he saw there was almost no money in the register. Do people think things through before starting them? He's in jail where he belongs. Oh, and there are no children of his in the area.
The U.S. Postal Service is fighting over $700 in traffic and parking tickets in Cleveland, claiming they're exempt from state and local laws. Who is the idiot who did something in Congress that even smells of making them immune from anything besides federal law?
Is anyone else tired of words being altered, i.e., catfished becoming a verb, "going postal" becoming an adverb, and so on? I sure am.
Do you remember when the Fox Hills mall was small, and yet had two bookstores in it? A B. Dalton and a Waldenbooks were at opposite ends of the mall. Heck, the Del Amo Fashion Center, long before the major expansion of stores in the parking lots, had three bookstores. B. Dalton's at both ends and a Waldenbooks in the middle. When was the last time you saw a brick and mortar bookstore inside a shopping mall? Radio Shack and Best Buy are among the retailers who will be closing lots of their locations in 2013, due to declining sales. Online competition is killing them.
Does the Catholic Church really think that stripping retired Cardinal Roger Mahony of his "administrative duties" is sufficient? I know I mentioned this before but it bears repeating. He should be in jail.
Did Indiana's Department of Natural Resources really try to prosecute a couple for saving an injured deer and returning it to the wild? Yep. Why?
