Boy bullied over pink sneakers and other headlines

Ryan Marotta wanted to pay tribute to his mother, a breast cancer survivor, so he wore a pair of pink sneakers to school.  It was also his way of acknowledging Breast Cancer Survivor's Month, which just ended.  He got bullied.  When his fellow students learned why he'd stopped wearing his pink sneakers, and why he'd worn them in the first place, many of them showed up the next day in pink.  Pink shirts, socks, shoes and pants were everywhere.

And the South Korean pop group, Girls' Generation were all clad in pink when they accepted their YouTube Music Award at the website's first ever ceremony.

A report from a nonprofit shows that the annual cost of childcare is higher in some states than the cost of a year's tuition at a state college in the same state.  Due to strict regulations, the year-round cost of using a day care center to provide care for a four year old averages $12,355 in Massachusetts.

Residents of Toronto are in a good news/bad news situation.  The good news is that their mayor, Rob Ford has finally admitted using crack cocaine.  The bad news is not only is he refusing to resign, but he's promising to run for reelection next year.

President Obama has backtracked a bit further on his pledge that "...if you like your healthcare plan, you can keep it."    On Monday night he said "While virtually every insurer is offering new, better plans and competing for these folks' business, I realize that can be scary for people if you just get some notice like that.  If you had or have one of these plans before the Affordable Care Act came into law and you really like that plan, what we said was, you could keep it if hasn't changed since the law's passed, you're grandfathered in." although he again noted insurance companies had the power to change it themselves.

A new study shows that men with low levels of testosterone who undergo so-called "T replacement therapy" are at a much greater risk for heart disease, heart attack and sudden cardiac death.

What makes these dunks so amazing is that Josh Kioh is only 5'8" tall and plays on the JV team at Adams State.  I'm guessing there are some serious deficits in the rest of his game, or the varsity team there is incredibly strong, talent-wise.

In evaluating the facts about what Richie Incognito may or may not have done to 2nd year player Jonathan Martin that led up to Incognito's suspension, bear this in mind.  One NFL executive is on the record saying that when Incognito was in the pool for the 2005 NFL draft, he was marked "DNDC" on their list of potential draftees.  That's code for "Do Not Draft - Conduct".  Here is an excerpt from his ESPN Scout's biography after his performance in the 2005 NFL Combine:  "However, his inability to control his emotions both on and off the field is such a significant concern that he'll likely slip to the later rounds of the draft."  He was voted the NFL's "Dirtiest Player" in 2009.  He's been reprimanded for his behavior toward employees of his soon to be former team, the Miami Dolphins.  He was suspended by his college team for unspecified reasons and never played another down of college football.  Reporter's Note:  Clearly Incognito has issues.  Threats and racial slurs are unacceptable.  See yesterday's blog for more commentary.

Kimberly Walker survived two tours in Iraq while serving in the U.S. Army, only to be murdered back home, allegedly by her boyfriend.  Now her parents are fighting with a Cincinnati cemetery over the headstone they know she would have wanted.  She was a huge fan of SpongeBob SquarePants and they spent $26,000 on two giant memorial statues of SpongeBob, that were approved by a cemetery representative.  Now the cemetery says they can't be displayed.

A middle school football coach in the Portland, OR area had scheduled his team's awards dinner at the local Hooters and he refused to change it when pressured by the school's administration.  So, they fired him.  Now he's seeking his job back.

KMart's customers are pissed off that the discount retailer will be open all day long on Thanksgiving and they are threatening a boycott.

The "ghost chili" and the chili that topped it as world's hottest chili pepper, the Butch T Scorpion have a new competitor.  The "Carolina Reaper" and its developer is working to have his creation named the hottest pepper in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records.  A laboratory is claiming the Carolina Reaper is more than 100 times hotter than a jalapeno.

The cast of "The Love Boat" reunited for an appearance on TV's "The Talk" and the hosts of that show all dressed up as characters from the long-running ABC show (it ran for nine seasons in primetime).  But Julie Chen just didn't make it as Captain Stubing.

A family in Britain had to flee their home after the mother noticed spiders hatching on the banana she was eating.  They turned out to be Brazilian wandering spiders, considered to be the world's most deadly venomous spider.  Their house is being fumigated.  BTW, the venom of the Brazilian wandering spider contains a toxin that has been proven to help prevent erectile dysfunction.  Spider Viagra anyone?

Senator Rand Paul, facing accusations of plagiarism is blaming his staff and the "footnote police" for cutting and pasting chunks of Wikipedia into his speeches and writings, without proper attribution.

Jaimie Alexander, one of the stars of "Thor 2" wore a very revealing dress to the movie's premiere but claims she wore it because of what it covered rather than what it exposed.  The long sleeves and other fabric covered all of her visible tattoos.
