The headlines that caught my eye

In the headlines, there have been several deaths of notable people within the last 24 hours.  Margaret Thatcher, former British Prime Minister has died at the age of 87.  She was the nation’s first female prime minister.  Annette Funicello, one of the original “Mouseketeers” on the Walt Disney “Mickey Mouse Club” TV show has died from MS at the age of 70.  Lilly Pulitzer, socialite and designer has died at the age of 81.  Sara Montiel, Spanish film star has died at the age of 85.

California has become the latest state to sell the Powerball Lottery tickets.

China’s President, Xi Jinping is urging world leaders to stop trying to throw the world into “chaos” in a message aimed at North Korean leader Kim Jong Un without mentioning him by name.

It remains to be seen if the Cleveland Indians can find a way to win under new manager Terry Francona, but at least they’ve found a way to get him to the ballpark.  He got lost on the two block walk from where he is living to the ballpark, but a club employee found him and gave him a ride in a golf cart.

Former porn star Jenna Jameson has had another run-in with the law, being cited for battery.

A recently released book claims that rock musician Alice Cooper turned down the sexual advances of actress Raquel Welch back in 1976.

The moronic membership of the Westboro Baptist Church had announced that they would picket the funeral of film critic Roger Ebert, but apparently they didn’t show up.  Maybe someone will picket outside the Westboro church.

A 5 year old boy in Ohio was sent home from kindergarten because his Mohawk haircut was “disruptive”.

While I won’t mention the name of the celebrity who got fired from what’s-his-name’s TV show, I will mention that it is the height of stupidity to get fired for spelling your boss’s wife’s name wrong.

In case you were hoping to be the next guy in Scarlett Johannson’s life if she ever breaks up with her current boyfriend, she doesn’t like jealous men.

For those who are questioning whether or not Beyonce and Jay-Z had the required government permission to visit Cuba (tourism is barred without advance permission), explain why their trip is so important while tens of thousands of Americans violate the ban annually, without being mentioned.

JC Penney has fired its CEO Ron Johnson after less than two years on the job.  The company is mired in a financial slump.

That isn’t President Barrack Obama sending you those tweets on “his” Twitter account.  It’s a non-profit that he turned the account over to.

Students at a Georgia high school prom got an unwelcome after-prom prize.  Boots on the cars they parked in the nearby lot that they had assumed was free because there had been no attendant on duty.

For all of you “Mad Men” fans, that was actress Linda Cardellini playing the wife of Don Draper’s neighbor on last night’s season premiere.  You may recognize her from TV’s “ER” her last series role of note.
