2018 CA Primary Ballot - Race for Governor

Incumbent Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom is the front runner in the contest to succeed Governor Jerry Brown.  His prior experience in government is serving two terms as the mayor of San Francisco.  During that time, then-Mayor Newsom made big headlines by issuing marriage licenses for same-sex couples.

He has run a primary campaign with a very specific goal in mind.  To be running against Republican John H. Cox, avoiding having to compete against another Democrat in November.  To that end negative ads have been run by his campaign and others who support his candidacy that have cut into the support of former L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and incumbent CA State Treasurer John Chiang.

The campaign has been effective.  A poll conducted by the UC Berkeley Institute of Government Studies shows Newsom leading the race with 33% of likely voters indicating they will choose him.  John Cox is running 2nd with 20% and Antonio Villaraigosa trailing at 13%.

Unlike the California race for the U.S. Senate, I don't have concerns about the race being between a Democrat and a Republican.  No matter who wins, the bicameral Legislature will remain firmly in the hands of Democrats.  Then there is the fact that the last time anyone not named Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected governor of California was over 20 years ago.

Fox News published a story claiming the #MeToo movement is giving Newsom and Villaraigosa "a pass" for having affairs.  In Newsom's case it was with someone who worked for him.  In Villaraigosa's case it was with a television reporter who covered his work as mayor.  Newsom was going through a divorce when he had the affairs with his appointments secretary; but she says it wasn't something that should be part of #MeToo.

I don't give a damn about consensual affairs, although having one with a work subordinate isn't smart.  I do have a problem with the fact that Villaraigosa was twice fined for ethics violations, so I couldn't support him anyway.

I'm voting for Gavin Newsom.
