Family of brain-dead teen seeks honorary diploma and other eye-catching headlines

The family of Jahi McMath wants her to receive an honorary diploma and to be recognized at this Friday's 8th grade graduation ceremony at the E. C. Reems Academy of Technology and Arts in Oakland.  School officials are considering the request.

Casey Kasem is in hospice care in Washington, where his family is by his side; food, water and medications are being withheld, and they are playing tapes of his old American Top 40 broadcasts.  His children are following the instructions contained in a health directive that Kasem signed when he was still in command of his faculties.

Shelly Sterling got what she wanted today in L. A. court, sort of.  A judge ruled that there will be a hearing in her attempt to enforce the family trust's provisions regarding incompetence of either her or Donald Sterling, and the hearing will be held July 7th.  She was seeking a hearing that would allow a decision to be made before the NBA team owners vote to approve the sale.  That vote is scheduled for July 15th.

The unions that represent California teachers will be working hard to overturn on appeal the ruling that says teacher tenure is unconstitutional. 

Turns out that Sgt Bowe Bergdahl had been discharged from the U. S. Coast Guard in 2006, for "mental health" reasons.  Reporter's note:  How did he manage to get into the U. S. Army with that on his records??

A Washington teen was hiking on her own in Alaska while talking to her mother on a cellphone when she fell 30 feet.  This led to her being rescued by the Alaska State Troopers.  The rescue was recorded and will show up in a fall episode of the reality show "Alaska State Troopers" on the National Geographic Channel.

 In the aftermath of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor's primary election defeat by a Tea Party member, a race to succeed him as the Majority Leader is shaping up.

A waitress at a Waffle House that received a tip of $1,500 from a customer almost didn't get the money.  The company made her return the tip, claiming it doesn't allow large tips to be left by customers paying via credit card.  The customer, contacted by a newspaper columnist, wrote the server a check.

Taobao is the Chinese equivalent of EBay and is doing a brisk business in faux doctor's notes that allow Chinese workers to miss work in order to watch World Cup matches.

Hillary Clinton mislabeled Abraham Lincoln as having been a U. S. Senator from Illinois rather than a member of the House of Representatives, as he actually was.  Reporter's note - nothing more than poor preparation, not a big deal.

In Gulford, NC, Desmone Kearse graduated from high school.  Not a big deal until you learn that she managed to do this while being homeless and helping her mother care for her younger siblings.

In Brighton, TN, the former boyfriend of Angela Brower is in jail, waiting for a chance to enter his plea as he is accused of abusing her.  Ms Brower posted photos documenting her abuse to social media.

A letter arrived at a P.O. box in Redlands, CA recently.  It had been postmarked June 14, 1957.
