A lottery for prom dates and other eye-catching headlines

Male students at Corona del Mar High in Orange County allegedly conduct a pro-sports like "draft lottery" to determine which of them will get to ask specific girls to be their dates at the prom.  The story, first reported in the Orange County Register, cites a former school district employee as a source.

When "Bernie" came out with Jack Black in the title role, the real Bernie, one Bernie Tiede of Texas became even more famous.  He has been released from prison but a condition of that release is that he live with the director of that film, Richard Linklater.  New evidence, showing Bernie suffered from abuse as a child was the impetus for his release.

Major General Smedley Butler is one of the few ever two-time recipients of the Medal of Honor, and he's credited with introducing the English bulldog as the official mascot of the U. S. Marine Corps. Now there's a new mascot at the Corps' San Diego recruit training center, a ten week old bulldog named, Smedley Butler.

A report from the California Legislative Analyst's office shows that state leaders continue to avoid dealing with the more than $200 billion in unfunded long-term costs for retirement benefits for state and other government employees.  These include $73.7 billion in unfunded costs to provide teacher pensions.

The parents of 13 year old Willow Smith, one Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith don't seem to have a problem with their teen daughter posing for photos atop the bed of a 20 year old man.

A Compton security company is issuing "fake" parking tickets in what appears to be an attempt to scam residents of some building complexes into paying fines that are not legally assessed.

It's looking like the reign of "The Amazing Spiderman 2" at the top of the box office charts may be very short-lived.  "Neighbors" is a comedy that opens on Friday and is expected to compete for that #1 spot.  Reporter's note:  I'm much more interested in seeing the new film from Jon Favreau "Chef" and "God's Pocket", one of the last films from Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Actor Mekhi Phifer has filed for bankruptcy protection.  Court documents show that his current monthly expenses exceed his income by over $4,000.  Reporter's note:  Sounds like a typical Westside household.

Three U. S. Navy P-3 aircraft were crushed beyond repair in a hangar at a base in Japan when an unusually heavy snowfall hit.  Reporter's note:  Those things run around $40 million each, and the Navy self-insures.

Strikes by fast-food workers in the U.S. are expected to take place in more than 150 cities on May 15th.

Two convicted murderers in South Carolina were remorseful about their act, right up until the moment they were sentenced to life in prison.  Then the two Neo-Nazis changed their tune and claimed they would kill Charles Parker, a registered sex-offender again, given the chance.

U. S. Army personnel are rushing to get tattoos before they will be photographed, after which time, any new tattoos that are visible, along with any that are racist or sexist, are prohibited.

The United States booked a surplus of $114 billion this past April, the largest in any April since 2008.
