Settlement over sexual assault allegations at Occidental and other eye-catching headlines

At least 10 current and former female students at Occidental College reached a confidential settlement with the school over alleged mishandling of their allegations of sexual assault.  All of the women were represented by Gloria Allred.  Reporter's note:   Is it just me, or is Allred always in a bright red or blue suit?

The last remaining major aircraft production line in Southern California will disappear in 2015 as Boeing will shutter its C-17 program in Long Beach. 

That 1966 Volvo that was approaching 3 million miles on the odometer has finally reached the milestone.  The owner says the only thing that might prevent him from getting to the 4 million mile mark is he may not live long enough.  He's convinced the car can get there.

"Better off this way" and "my elf weapon" were two messages that Washington, D.C. Navy Yard shooter Aaron Alexis etched into the shotgun he had purchased only two days earlier.  Their meaning will probably be argued about for a long time.

A Naval officer, a supervisory agent for Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) and a military contractor have all been arrested in connection with a bribery scheme involving hundreds of millions of dollars in Navy contracts.  Luxury travel and hookers were among the things allegedly used by those arrested to bribe others.

A 90 year old, highly decorated veteran of WWII has won a battle against an eviction notice.  He'd been ordered to vacate the home he shares with his wife (who has Alzheimer's) because he was smoking inside the home.  A compromise was reached.  He had tried to comply with the rule and fell down as a result.

In San Diego, a 16 year old girl who continues to volunteer at the homeless shelter where she had once lived with her family, was awarded a new car as the winner of the "Spark of Hope" award.

Football coaches at a high school in New Jersey have been suspended for various lengths of time for their involvement in an incident where a student was bullied.  Reports are the student asked too many questions as practices and he was nicknamed "the Riddler" and question marks were drawn on his jersey.

A supplement to the main textbook used in AP History classes in Denton, TX has rewritten the 2nd Amendment.  Their version is:  “The people have the right to keep and bear arms in a state militia.”  Anyone who needs the correct text posted for comparison should feel free to email me.

The Rosebud Restaurant Group in Chicago operates ten restaurants.  They are the subject of a lawsuit filed by the EEOC that claims they prefer not to hire African Americans.

The creator of the Beanie Babies is going to pay a civil penalty of $53.5 million in a case of tax evasion where he hid money in a Swiss bank account.  He stands accused of not having paid $885,300 in taxes back in 2002.
