L.A. seeking to keep convicted rapist out of the county

Prosecutors are trying to block the release of a convicted serial rapist to Los Angeles County, where he was born and raised.  Christopher Evans Hubbart is 62, has spent more than two decades in state mental hospitals and has committed at least 40 rapes thus far in his life.  This is one of those guys no one will want being released into their community.

Vice President Biden and AZ Governor Jan Brewer were there to honor the 19 firefighters killed fighting the Yarnell fire.

30,000 inmates in California prisons are refusing meals to protest food, and other conditions in their prisons.

The prime suspect in the apparent arson fire inside a building at Saddleback College is the 21 year old student who died in the blaze.

The FBI file on the Rodney King case has been released and found to be made up almost entirely of...newspaper clippings.  Great investigating, guys.

Los Angeles City Fire Chief Brian Cummings has announced he wants to keep his job.  Since newly inaugurated mayor Eric Garcetti is requiring all city department heads to reapply for their jobs, and he's promised to pay particular attention to LAFD, Cummings may not get what he wants.

A visitor to Yosemite National Park has found the wreckage of a plane that had been missing since December.  The body of the pilot was found at the scene.

People are going to extremes to quit smoking.  A man in Turkey built a wire cage that he wears around his head anytime he's outside of his home (his wife won't let him smoke at home).  And a 31 year old California woman went even further.  She slapped a cop intending to be arrested and sent to jail, where smoking isn't allowed.  She'll be 63 days clean when she is released.

Orson Scott Card, author of the wildly popular novel "Ender's Game" is not backing down from his past comments regarding his opposition to same-sex marriage.  Many people plan to boycott the upcoming film version of the novel, starring Harrison Ford, because Card is unrepentant.

A woman has been living in the Cancun airport for over a week now, baffling airport authorities as to why she's staying there.  She's making withdrawals from an airport ATM so she isn't there because she has no money.

Goldie Hawn, looking wonderful as always and nowhere near her age (67..shhhhh) was playing tennis against her daughter Kate, with both in evening gowns.  The impromptu match occurred at a charity event.  Someone should tell Goldie it might be easier to play tennis if she would lose the heels.

Some cardiologists are now speculating that Randy Travis might be suffering from alcoholic cardiomyopathy, rather than viral cardiomyopathy.  Does it really matter, except to the treating physician?

Nelson Mandela's grandson says that while Mandela remains in critical condition, he is "responsive" and "aware".

A brochure issued at one particular Air Force base on "rape prevention" is drawing criticism because it advised military women to consider not resisting their attacker, especially if he has a weapon.  I clearly remember police officers addressing this subject to civilians saying "if you feel your life is in danger if you resist, don't."  Seems like good advice to me, but I'm not an expert in that area.

Yum Brands owns Kentucky Fried Chicken.  They're considering their legal options concerning a new take-out place in Thailand.  Hitler's Fried Chicken has a logo showing the body of Colonel Sanders, but with the head of Hitler edited in.  There's a growing fascination with "Nazi chic" in Thailand.

Book lovers who prefer shopping in a real "bricks and mortar" store rejoice.

The State of Florida intended to outlaw internet cafes, because of their ties to gambling.  After a new law was passed hundreds of them closed.  But now it appears that the language of this new law may have been a bit too broad and the legislators might have just outlaws all computers and smartphones.

If you were asked to name the U.S. city with the highest concentration of millionaires living there, would the first state that comes to mind be New Mexico?  Los Alamos has the highest concentration of millionaires living there, 11.7% of the city's households.

Did NASA really tell a woman who tried to become an astronaut in 1962 that not only were women not allowed to become astronauts, but that no such program was being contemplated?

Kobe Bryant says he will be disappointed if the Lakers use the amnesty program to get rid of Metta World Peace.

A new article says it's easy to avoid being snooped on by the NSA.  Just don't go online or use a smartphone.  Good luck with that.

If you were in London and you thought you saw a Ferrari 599 covered in velvet, you weren't hallucinating.  The $300,000 car was recently flown there by a vacationer who didn't want to rent a car locally.

Elizabeth Hasselbeck is leaving "The View" for Fox News Channel.  In other shocking developments, the sky was blue yet again today.

That silver bangle bracelet some women are falling in love with has a special secret.  It's really a flask to keep booze in.  At $225 it might be a bit pricey for some.

Yes, Paris Hilton and her friends dressed some drunk dude who passed out at her July 4th party in Malibu up in a bikini top and took photos.  No, it wasn't funny.
