This correspondent apologizes for the last few days of missed headlines...

but I didn't have access to a computer in my hospital bed.  On this Saturday afternoon, our top story is a sad one.  Jean Stapleton, best known as "Edith Bunker" from "All in the Family"; has died at the age of 90.  She won three Emmys and two Golden Globes for her work on the TV show but also appeared on stage and the big screen.

The 3,600 acre Powerhouse fire continues to give firefighters a tough time and the heat isn't helping.  The fire is at present less than 20% contained.

NBA player Grant Hill used the TV broadcast of a playoff game to announce his retirement after 18 seasons.

Did a game of "hide and seek" lead to reports that a 4 year old girl had disappeared?  She was reported as missing to police who began a search but was found in a box under a bed in the home she was visiting.

Boxer Manny Pacquaio may not fight in the U.S. again, except on pay-per-view.  According to promoter Bob Arum, having to give us 40% of his earnings in each fight in U.S. taxes doesn't sit well with Pacquaio.  His next fight will take place in Macau, but be shown in the U.S.  Probably for $49.95 or more.

Mike Adams, offensive tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers is in the hospital with wounds that are considered non-life-threatening after being stabbed.  He was near his truck when three men approached and tried to carjack him (wouldn't that be truckjack?).  He resisted and was stabbed.  He is expected to make a full recovery.

The City of Dupont, Washington may have to repay $550,000 to the state's government employee pension system because a retired fire chief who returned to work was misclassified as an independent contractor.  Apparently Greg Hull is not on the hook for the money but Dupont may be.  The amount represents roughly 1/3rd of the city's budget for its fire department.

Once again Oklahoma has been hit by tornadoes.  Worse yet, the twisters were followed by serious flooding.  Nine are known dead and more than 100 injured.

If you're going to make an error in spelling in tweeting a news headline, reporting who won the National Spelling Bee is probably one of the worst moments for that to happen.  As Russell Goldman has learned after getting the name of the winner wrong in his tweet on that boy's victory.

By the way, the winning word that Arvind Mahankali spelled was "knaidel" which means "small mass of dough cooked by boiling in water" (i.e., a matzoh ball).  NYC's famed Carnegie Deli plans to send three servings of their matzoh ball soup to him so he can try a knaidel.

A third "training video" made by IRS employees that doesn't show the agency in a good light has turned up.  First came the "Star Trek" and "Gilligan's Island" parodies on which more than $60,000 was wasted.  This "line dancing" video cost less than $2,000 but it isn't going over well with the public or Congress.

Factoid:  Estimates are that 85% of American women wear the wrong size bra.

Former Minnesota Governor Jesse "The Body" Ventura is exploring the possibility of running for the presidency in 2016.

In Dallas, the rooming house where Lee Harvey Oswald stayed in the weeks prior to his assassination of President John F. Kennedy is for sale.

Scott Thorson, who was portrayed by Matt Damon in the recent HBO movie "Behind the Candelbra" was in jail when his life as the late Liberace's "partner" was premiered on the cable network.  He is awaiting sentencing for burglary and identity theft.  Now he's out on bail that was put up by the owner of the "Bunny Ranch", a Nevada brothel.

Academy Award winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman spent ten days in a detox facility for narcotics abuse and is now working on a movie.  Only ten days???
