Eye-catching headlines as the Memorial Day Weekend begins
Lois Lerner's time on the "hot seat" in front of Congress may not be over. Congressman Darrell Issa, head of the committee that Lerner refused to testify in front of is now claiming that she waived her Fifth Amendment rights and may be recalled. (If they really want her testimony, just immunize her)
If you haven't seen the photos of Julianne Moore's wayward toes from a pair of shoes she wore while attending the Cannes Film Festival, they are easy to find. The toes may not be, since she claims to have cut them off. She actually handed a box to Jimmy Fallon when appearing on his show. Were they the real toes? You'll have to check for yourself.
Amanda Bynes was arrested after she allegedly threw a bong out of her apartment window in front of police officers. She'd been reported to police because she was apparently smoking pot in the lobby of her apartment building. She was released without bail but this may constitute a violation of her probation.
Apparently some media outlets can't read, or else they can't count. They saw the story in Variety about Janet Jackson being a "billion dollar entertainer" and interpreted that to mean she is a billionaire. She isn't. She's earned $1 billion in revenue from her work, but she is not worth $1 billion which is the accepted definition. Estimates of her net worth range from $100 million to $250 million.

Two recent graduates of the UC Berkeley Law School entered pleas in a Las Vegas courtroom in a case involving the beheading of an exotic bird. Hazhir Karagan pled no contest and was sentenced to two days in jail and 48 hours of community service. Justin Teixeira pled not guilty to being the one who actually beheaded the bird and will go on trial later this year.
This weekend will feature the premiere broadcast of the HBO movie "Behind the Candelabra" starring Michael Douglas as the entertainer Liberace and Matt Damon as his long-time companion Scott Thorson. To this day, most of the world thinks that it was Las Vegas Sun investigative reporter Jeff German who uncovered proof that Liberace had AIDs. It wasn't. It was a former colleague of mine who managed to get copies of documents that proved Liberace had been diagnosed with the disease. Sorry, can't mention the colleague's name.
A woman in Jerome, Iowa was billed for nearly $100,000 in costs for the fire department's response to a fire in the apartments she managed, and the bill threatened to tack on an additional 20% in interest if it wasn't paid within 30 days. Now the city is saying the bill was a mistake and Sylvia Moore doesn't owe them $96,000.
If you're in Camp Point, IL and you need emergency assistance, there's a chance that the EMT that responds to help you will be an 85 year old woman who is the state's oldest EMT. Josephine Burkey is still on call 80-plus hours each week.

In Ross Township, PA (near Pittsburgh), a squabble between neighbors has boiled over and now one resident must remove toys and Christmas decorations by May 29th or they face a fine of $3,000 from a local judge. There is a urinating Santa Claus in the yard, among other things.
